From Sketch to Reality: How 'She Draws It, I Cook It' All Started

This is the exact notebook page where the magic started. We were sitting down and drawing together and of course I had to troll her by drawing Pac-Man and a very sophisticated yet questionable snack choice.
It started just like any other lazy afternoon. There we were, sitting side-by-side at the table, completely lost in a sea of colored pencils, markers, and paper. Spending that quiet, creative time coloring together has always been one of our favorite rituals. But on this particular day, the magic took an unexpected turn.
Out of nowhere, my daughter shifted from drawing her usual doodles to sketching out a vibrant, wildly imaginative plate of food. She capped her marker, looked up at me with wide eyes, and said the words that changed everything:
"It would be cool if you could make this. Right daddy?"
In that exact moment, the spark was lit. I looked at her drawing, looked at her hopeful smile, and knew I couldn’t just say no. What started as a simple, beautiful moment of connection between a dad and his daughter instantly grew into a brilliant concept. And just like that, She Draws It, I Cook It was born!
The Dreamer & The Builder
If you’ve been following our journey on social media, you already know we have a pretty specific dynamic around here!
The Creative Director (My Daughter): She is the visionary. She doesn't just draw food; she dreams up shapes, colors, and concepts without any of the boring rules of adult logic. If she wants a dish to be a brilliant shade of purple or shaped like a fantasy landscape, she creates it.
The Chef & Builder (Me): That’s where I come in. My job is to take her wildest visual dreams and figure out the culinary engineering to turn them into real, delicious plates of food. She brings the imagination, and I bring the heat!
Cooking from Scratch (most of the time), Coloring from Nature
Because this whole project is rooted in love and creativity, we wanted our kitchen philosophy to reflect that. We commit to making our dishes from scratch (most of the time), but the real fun is matching her vibrant imagination.
When my Creative Director hands me a sketch filled with velvet black, deep blues, or rich purple, I don’t reach for artificial dyes. Instead, we turn the kitchen into a delicious science lab, experimenting with natural food pigments like beet powder, annatto, and blue spirulina. It’s safe, healthy, and adds a whole extra layer of challenge and fun to the process.
From Sketch to Plate: The Visual Proof
To show you exactly what we mean, you have to see it to believe it. Take a look at this project we tackled together:
On the left: My daughter's original colored sketch. On the right: The final, purple, perfectly plated Ube Brownie topped with Matcha Green Tea Ice Cream.
Seeing her face light up when a drawing she held in her hands transforms into a hot, delicious meal on her breakfast plate is the best reward a dad could ask for.
What's Next?
This blog is going to be our new home for everything that doesn't fit into a short video. Moving forward, we’ll be sharing deep-dive recipe breakdowns, exclusive behind-the-scenes looks at our messy kitchen testing, and updates on a huge dream of ours: our upcoming cookbook project, which will feature her original drawings right alongside the recipes.
We are so incredibly grateful to have you along for the ride.
